Weaving has been part of Ireland’s story for generations. It has provided warmth, supported communities, and preserved skills that have been handed down through families for centuries. At John Hanly, we are proud to continue these traditions every day from our mill in County Tipperary.
Since 1893, our family has been weaving quality wool products using time-honoured techniques while embracing modern craftsmanship. Although the world has changed dramatically over the past century, many of the traditions that inspired our founders continue to shape every scarf, throw, blanket and cap we create.
Here are five Irish traditions that remain at the heart of everything we weave.
1. Craftsmanship Passed Down Through Generations

Ireland has a long history of artisan crafts, where skills were traditionally learned by working alongside experienced makers rather than from books alone.
John Hanly is now a fifth-generation family business, with knowledge and expertise passed from one generation to the next. Every member of our weaving team contributes to preserving techniques that have been refined over decades.
While modern machinery helps ensure consistency and precision, the experience of our skilled craftspeople remains essential in producing textiles that meet the highest standards.
This dedication to craftsmanship is one of the reasons our products are appreciated by customers around the world.
2. Working with Natural Wool

Wool has been one of Ireland’s most valued natural materials for centuries. It has protected generations from Ireland’s unpredictable weather while offering warmth, breathability and exceptional durability.
We continue this tradition by weaving with carefully selected natural fibres including:
- Fine Merino Wool
- Lambswool
- Mohair
- Cashmere blends
- Caregora Angora blends
- Shetland Wool
Carefully selected natural fibres create products that are naturally insulating, breathable and made to last for years rather than seasons. Choosing wool is also a celebration of slow, thoughtful craftsmanship—creating pieces that become favourites instead of disposable fashion.
3. Celebrating Ireland’s Landscape Through Colour

Inspired by the rich landscapes of Ireland, generations of artists, poets and craftspeople have celebrated the country’s natural beauty. Our surroundings influence many of the colours found throughout our collections, from rolling green hills and rugged coastlines to soft morning mist and golden autumn fields.
You’ll discover:
- Rich forest greens
- Ocean blues
- Heather purples
- Earthy browns
- Warm oat and cream neutrals
- Deep berry tones
These timeless colour palettes allow our scarves, throws and blankets to complement both modern interiors and classic wardrobes while quietly reflecting the beauty of Ireland.
4. Creating Products Designed to Last

Irish craftsmanship has always valued durability over disposable trends.
Historically, woven blankets and wool garments were treasured possessions, often passed from one generation to another. They were carefully looked after because they were made to endure.
We continue this philosophy today by creating products designed for everyday use and lasting quality.
Many customers tell us their John Hanly scarves and blankets have accompanied them for years—travelling across continents, becoming family favourites and even being gifted to the next generation.
Rather than chasing fast fashion, we believe in creating timeless pieces that remain beautiful year after year.
5. Weaving Beside the River Nenagh

One of the most enduring traditions at John Hanly is our connection to place.
Our mill remains in Ballyartella, County Tipperary, where it has stood for well over a century beside the River Nenagh.
The river has always played an important role in the mill’s history and continues to do so today. We generate much of our own electricity using a hydroelectric turbine, harnessing the natural power of the river that has flowed alongside our weaving heritage for generations.
It is a wonderful example of how traditional industry and responsible innovation can work together, allowing us to honour our past while looking towards the future.
